Trek-Segafredo splits up its grand tour trident
Divide and conquer. Roughly, that’s the plan for shared leadership Trek-Segafredo set out for its three GC riders on Thursday.
Vincenzo Nibali will race the Giro d’Italia while Richie Porte and Bauke Mollema will take on the Tour de France. Mollema, Nibali, and last year’s Giro sensation Giulio Ciccone are slated to race the Vuelta a Espana.
The decision to send the team’s only Tour de France winner, Nibali, to the Giro and not the Tour was made slightly easier by the Italian’s desire to take a crack at the Tokyo Olympic road race, which comes just a week after the Tour reaches Paris. Ciccone, who won two stages and the King of the Mountains classification at the Giro last year, will support Nibali in Italy.
Trek’s season openers
Australian fans will be pleased that Richie Porte is slated to return to the Tour Down Under to open his 2020 season, where he’ll hope to add another Willunga Hill win to his collection. He’ll be joined at TDU by the rainbow stripes of Mads Pedersen.
Pedersen will then head toward the cobbled classics, where he’ll look to go one better than his 2nd place at Flanders in 2018.
Nibali and Mollema will start their seasons at the Volta ao Algarve. Nibali then runs an Italian-heavy spring, taking in Tirreno-Adriatico and Milano-Sanremo ahead of the Giro d’Italia. Mollema will focus more closely on the Ardennes. Both will race Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
