Trek-Segafredo confirms that Vincenzo Nibali will race the Giro d’Italia: Daily News

We rolled into the new week with a confirmation from Trek-Segafredo that Vincenzo Nibali will start the Giro d’Italia. In other news, Deceuninck-QuickStep has announced the lineup that will support Joao Almeida and Remco Evenepoel at the Giro, while Bahrain Victorious says that the team is “all-in” for Mikel Landa in the Italian Grand Tour.

Vincenzo Nibali will race the Giro d’Italia
Trek-Segafredo has confirmed that Vincenzo Nibali, who broke his wrist in a training crash less than three weeks ago, will nevertheless make the start the upcoming Giro d’Italia. Nibali said last week that he would make his final decision after consulting with doctors following a short training camp.
“The surgeon who operated on Vincenzo, Dr Tami, first performed X-rays on the wrist, which showed that the plate was well positioned and there were no dislocations,” said Trek-Segafredo physician Emilio Magni in a team press release. “It means that the wrist has responded well to the stresses created during the last week of intense training. The following check-up has confirmed the good recovery of functionality and articulation, allowing Dr Tami to give his approval to Vincenzo’s return to racing. Everything went in the best way.”
Nibali will race alongside a strong team that also includes Bauke Mollema and Giulio Ciccone as potential leaders. Gianluca Brambilla, Koen de Kort, Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, and Jacopo Mosca round out the squad.
“Every piece is in place, we are ready for the challenge,” said team manager Luca Guercilena. “We’re very happy to have Vincenzo at the start and, above all, we’re excited to have the trio of captains we are hoping will race the Giro as protagonists. Their technical characteristics and their team play will be the key to cultivate our ambitions.”
Bahrain Victorious ‘all in’ for Landa at the Giro
Bahrain Victorious announced its Giro d’Italia lineup on Monday, with Mikel Landa set to lead the way for the squad. In a press release, sports director Gorazd Stangelj said the team was ‘all in’ for Landa at the race.
Landa will be joined by Pello Bilbao – who has had a strong 2021 so far – along with Gino Mäder, Damiano Caruso, Matej Mohoric, Jan Tratnik, Rafael Valls, and Yukiya Arashiro.
Evenepoel: ‘We will take it day by day’ at the Giro
Deceuninck-QuickStep has also unveiled its Giro d’Italia lineup, with Joao Almeida and Remco Evenepoel headlining the squad. Almeida rode to fourth overall at last year’s race, while Evenepoel will be making his Grand Tour debut in his first race back since he crashed at Il Lombardia last year and suffered a fractured pelvis.
Evenepoel will nonetheless start among the pre-race favorites, but he said in a team press release that he was planning to see how things went as the race progressed.
“I’m happy to race again after such a long period, during which I worked hard to be ready for my first Grand Tour,” Evenepoel said. “Being my first race since last August means that we’ll need to see how my body will react. We will take it day by day and see how things go. The most important thing is that I am back with my teammates and staff again, which makes me very happy.”
Joining Almeida and Evenepoel at the race will be Rémi Cavagna, Mikkel Honoré, Iljo Keisse, James Knox, Fausto Masnda, and Pieter Serry.
