Tour de France gallery: Third time lucky for plucky Hirschi

Marc Hirschi (Sunweb) has earned himself plenty of fans over the past couple weeks. On stage 2 of his very first Grand Tour, the 22-year-old Swiss rider finished second behind Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) after getting in the stage-winning move. That was impressive enough. Then on stage 9 Hirschi put in a big solo attack that very nearly went the distance. He was caught less than 2km from the finish, but still managed to take third in the sprint. Not the result he wanted, but a hell of a performance nonetheless.

And then on stage 12, Hirschi took things to another level.

After his Sunweb team forged a dangerous late break, Hirschi attacked just inside 30 km to go and soloed all the way to the finish. His win was the very definition of perseverance and showed that if you can combine tenacity, aggression, tactical nous, great descending ability, and plenty of strength, good things will come your way. There’s a lot to like about the former U23 world champion. And based on what he’s shown at his first Tour de France, big things lie ahead.

Here’s how stage 12 of the Tour de France unfolded, as captured by our photographers at the race.
