Tom Pidcock will miss Strade Bianche with a stomach virus
The Ineos Grenadiers said on Friday that Tom Pidcock will not take part in Strade Bianche “due to a stomach virus he’s been suffering with since early this week.”
Pidcock, 22, had been among the top favorites for the Italian one-day after finishing fifth in the 2021 edition of the event.
The Ineos Grenadiers said on social media that “the medical team have taken the decision it’s better he returns home to rest ahead of his next race.”
The squad will still field a talented lineup at Strade Bianche despite Pidcock’s absence, with Olympic champion Richard Carapaz and up-and-coming Classics talent Jhonatan Narváez headlining the team.
How Pidcock’s illness will affect the rest of his spring calendar remains to be seen. At least prior to Friday’s news, he had been expected to race Milan-San Remo later this month ahead of a busy slate of cobbled Classics and Ardennes races.
