Tom Dumoulin is set to return to the pro peloton
Tom Dumoulin is set to return to the pro peloton at the Tour de Suisse on June 6, Team Jumbo-Visma confirms earlier reports from Wielerflits. According to his team’s statement Dumoulin has found the joy of cycling back. The 30-year-old Dutchman hopes to use the Swiss race, plus the Dutch national time trial and road championships, to prepare for the Olympics in Tokyo, where he will race the road race on July 24 and the time trial on July 28.
Dumoulin announced on 23 January that he was stepping away from racing for a while to collect his thoughts on how to proceed in life. “I have been doubting for quite some time, months, maybe even a year, how I should find my way as Tom Dumoulin the cyclist,” he said at the time. “The pressure, the expectations from different parties, I just want to do well for the team, for the sponsors, for my wife, for my family. I want to do well for everybody but over the course of doing that I kind of forgot myself.
“What do I want, and what does the human being Tom Dumoulin want with his career? The question that has been stirring inside of me for several months really deep that I have never gotten the time to really think about life as a pro cyclist just continues. We are on a fast train.”
In recent weeks Dumoulin was spotted more and more in Limburg, the province in the south of the Netherlands, where he was born and raised, and mostly on his time trial bike. In Rio de Janeiro he won a silver medal in the Olympic time trial, behind Fabian Cancellara. The year after Dumoulin became world champion against the clock.
The Dutch cycling union had already added Dumoulin to its list of only seven male road cyclists to be vaccinated against the coronavirus ahead of the upcoming Olympics. Dumoulin was also spotted as a guest at the Amstel Gold Race.
