Tom Dumoulin is reportedly planning to race the Giro

Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) has his sights set on the Giro d’Italia in 2022, Wielerflits reports.

The 31-year-old Dutchman, who spent several months on hiatus away from racing in 2021, has said that he will get back to targeting general classification titles this season. According to Wielerflits and other media reports as well, that will start with the 2022 Giro d’Italia.

It makes sense that Dumoulin would target the Italian Grand Tour for a number of reasons. For one thing, he has won the race in the past. Dumoulin stormed to the overall victory there in 2017, and followed that up with a runner-up performance the following season, in which he also rode to second at the Tour de France. He counts four Giro stage wins on his career palmares, as well.

What’s more, Dumoulin’s Jumbo-Visma team already has a formidable roster for the Tour de France without needing to rely on Dumoulin as a leader there. Primož Roglič rode to second at the Tour in 2020, and Vingegaard took runner-up honors at the race in 2021. Both riders are expected to target the Tour for Jumbo-Visma in 2022, with Steven Kruijswijk also expected to be in the mix.

Whether Dumoulin will also ride the Tour, in any role, remains to be seen. For now, however, all indications are that the Giro is his first priority, and he will undoubtedly be a rider to watch when the race rolls out from Budapest in May. Even after he spent months away from competition in 2021, Dumoulin was sharp when he made his return to racing, winning the Dutch national time trial title and taking a silver medal in the discipline at the Tokyo Olympics.
