Tirreno TT: Ganna wins as Evenepoel and Pogačar set for GC duel
Filippo Ganna won the opening time trial at Tirreno-Adriatico on Monday in what marked his third victory of the season. Remco Evenepoel and Tadej Pogačar finished second and third, respectively, to lay the foundations for GC bids in the Italian stage race.
After his victory in Lido di Camaiore, Filippo Ganna suggested that Milan-San Remo looms large on his calendar.
“At the moment it’s a good time gap but tomorrow is a hard day with a sprint and we’ll see how it concerns the jersey,” he said. “We need to save a little energy because in less than two weeks we have a special race in Italy, and I want to arrive with good legs.”
The 13.9 km Tirreno TT saw Alex Dowsett spend a lengthy stretch atop the provisional standings before Kasper Asgreen pipped his time and moved into the hot seat. Before long, however, Ganna went 24 seconds faster to set the mark that would ultimately withstand every other challenger. Asgreen would eventually finish fourth as Evenepoel arrived 11 seconds down on Ganna while Pogačar finished 18 seconds back.
The race continues with a 219 km stage 2 from Camaiore to Sovicille on Tuesday.
