The Women’s Tour to be broadcast live

The Women’s Tour, formally known as the OVO Women’s Tour, has announced a partnership with Eurosport and GCN that will see the race broadcast live in 2021. Moreover, the partnership is set to last for the next five years, indicating the Women’s Tour organisers SweetSpot are planning to continue hosting the event for years to come.

SweetSpot will also work with Eurosport and GCN to introduce live coverage of the six-day Women’s Tour race, which forms part of the UCI Women’s WorldTour calendar, expanding the reach of women’s cycling further via Discovery’s global scale. Enhanced content – including previews, features and analysis of both events from the best cycling experts – will also feature across Eurosport and GCN platforms.

Organizers said in a press release regarding the partnership.

This is a major move for the women’s six-day event. In years previously the Women’s Tour has pushed to add more stages to the race while also fielding some of the most impressive riders in the women’s peloton. The placement of the race on the calendar and the challenging nature of the course makes the Women’s Tour a favourite among the peloton, and the lack of live coverage in the past has been a blow to fans hoping to see the ladies throwing down in front of picturesque British countrysides.

One rider in particular who commends the move toward live coverage is 2019 winner Lizzie Deignan. The OVO Women’s Tour was her first WorldTour win after giving birth to her daughter Orla. “It’s great to see the race has partnered with Eurosport and GCN and it being live means there will be even more exciting racing throughout and adds to the already brilliant atmosphere,” Deignan said in the press release.

The 2021 edition of the Women’s Tour is set to take place from June 7th to the 12th between Oxfordshire and Suffolk, although the specific route has not yet been announced.

Alongside the news of live coverage, the race also noted that they are still looking for title sponsorship moving forward. When the 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID-19 the organisers held a virtual event sponsored by Skoda but the real-world race started looking for a title sponsor before the 2020 season was disrupted.
