| The UCI announces new rider safety protocols
The UCI announced new protocols on Thursday that address safety concerns across all disciplines of the sport and in road cycling specifically.
In January, new concussion protocols will be put into place across the various disciplines of cycling. The new measures create a framework for both on-course assessment, calling for non-health professionals associated with events to receive training to recognize the symptoms of a concussion, as well as post-race assessment. New guidelines also address the protocol around returning to racing following a concussion.
The UCI also announced that a number of safety measures specific to road cycling will go into effect in 2021, including the addition of a Safety Manager to the UCI’s sports department, protocols for communication of safety information to riders during events, the modernization of roadside barriers, to name only a few of the items mentioned in the UCI’s announcement.
| Greg Lemond “really honored” to receive Congressional Gold Medal
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, three-time Tour de France winner Greg Lemond say that he was “really honored” to receive a Congressional Gold Medal, and called it “humbling to even be considered.”
A bill to award Lemond the medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by Congress, was passed by the House of Representatives and then the Senate before being signed into law by President Donald Trump last Friday, December 4. Lemond is the first cyclist to receive the award.
“I always think that something like this is for people who are saving lives, or inventing cures for new diseases,” Lemond said. “I’m really honored, but at the same time, I don’t take getting awards really well. I always feel like there’s other deserving people.”
| Bora-Hansgrohe signs ski mountaineer Anton Palzer
Ski mountaineer and mountain runner Anton Palzer will join Bora-Hansgrohe next season, the team announced on Thursday. The 27-year-old German “is aiming to begin his journey in cycling with BORA – hansgrohe from April onwards” after a final winter season focused on his other sporting goals, according to the team’s press release.
“Toni approached me this Spring with the question of whether I could support him in preparing for the World Ski Mountaineering Championships,” said Bora-Hansgrohe coach Helmut Dollinger. “We have been working together since April and it was soon clear that some of his performance values, such as his VO2max, are exceptional. In summer, he trains a lot on the bike anyway, so we examined his data in detail.
“However, the decisive factor for this change was that Toni was certain that he wanted to try it. The potential is there, but data isn’t everything. You still need to show your horsepower on the road. In any case, it will be an exciting project. It will be a particular challenge to make the transition from his last competition season in winter to his first bike races. But generally speaking, we have to be realistic, keep grounded, and use the first season to learn. Then we’ll be better able to see what is possible.”
| Deceuninck-Quick-Step unveils new kit for 2021
Deceuninck-Quick-Step will have a new look next season. The Belgian WorldTour squad unveiled its new kit for 2021 on Thursday.
Deceuninck’s new look will feature similar patterns to those on the 2020 kit, but with a shift towards a darker blues.
