The Tour of Utah won't be back in 2022

Tour of Utah organizer Medalist Sports announced on Wednesday “that it will no longer pursue planning efforts” for the race next year, with Medalist Sports owner and president Chris Aronhalt saying that the organization “cherishes the Tour of Utah’s legacy.”

The Tour of Utah was last held in 2019, but it was cancelled in 2020 and again in 2021. The stage race would have been the highest-rated UCI event in the United States in 2022; without it, the US domestic calendar will once again not feature any stage races above the 2.2 level.

First held in 2004, the Tour of Utah became part of the UCI America Tour in 2010, drawing increasingly big names to race in Utah in the summertime. The last five editions of the race were held at the 2.HC level, one step down from the WorldTour.

After back-to-back cancelled editions, the race announced in April that Medalist Sports had entered into a licensing agreement to organize the event for 2022. Apparently, however, attempts to find sufficient sponsorship support to back the race came up short.

“On-going sponsor and host community discussions have been positive; however, not strong enough to support a viable effort to meet our collective expectations,” Aronhalt said in a statement posted on social media. “While disappointed, Medalist Sports is grateful for the opportunity and cherishes the Tour of Utah’s legacy.”
