Tejay van Garderen is sticking with EF next season, announcing on Instagram that he has renewed with the American WorldTour squad.

Van Garderen closed out his second season with the team this past weekend at the Vuelta a España, where teammate Hugh Carthy rode to third overall.

“Thrilled to announce I will be riding with @efprocycling for the 2021 season,” van Garderen wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. “Going on season 12, and we got a lot of exciting things to look forward to. Let’s get it!!!”

Van Garderen, 32, joined EF at the start of 2019 after spending seven seasons with the BMC squad. In his early career, he rode to fifth overall at the Tour de France twice, including in 2012, when he won the young riders’ classification.

Since then, Grand Tour results has been harder to come by, but van Garderen has found plenty of success in one-week races, having taken overall two victories at the USA Pro Challenge and one at the Tour of California and numerous stages in stage races. Last season, he rode to second overall at the Critérium du Dauphiné. He pulled out of that year’s Tour with a broken thumb.

This season, he has largely ridden in support of teammates, with Rigoberto Urán leading the squad at the Tour and Carthy leading at the Vuelta.

It remains to be seen what his role will be moving forward, but either way, his contract renewal bolsters the stage racing credentials of a team that his bidding farewell to Daniel Martínez next year and that has yet to clarify whether Urán will stay for 2021.
