Team bikes of the 2022 men’s WorldTour
Team bikes of the 2022 men's WorldTour
It’s time for our annual look at all the bikes of the World Tour. As the men’s series kicks off first, we will start with a look at the equipment all the teams in the men’s World Tour will rely on in 2022. Unfortunately with the cancellation of a second consecutive Santos Tour Down Under, we once again have to bring you images provided by the teams rather than photos we’ve taken ourselves.
AG2R-Citroën
AG2R-Citroën had a major shakeup prior to last season with a host of new riders, a renewed focus on the Classics, and a new bike supplier. No surprise then that the French squad has little to no change for the 2022 season.
BMC supplies the bikes for a second consecutive year providing the team with the Teammachine SLR01, the Timemachine Road, and the Timemachine time trial bike. Campagnolo equips the BMC frames with its Super Record 12-speed groupsets and Bora wheels. The team uses Power2Max power meters, Look pedals, and Pirelli tyres.
Lastly, Fizik provides both the saddles and handlebar tape. AG2R-Citroën is one of the many squads now using Wahoo head units, although Elite still provides its trainers and presumably water bottles.
Astana Qazaqstan
Despite a name change and some big-name transfers in and out of the squad, Astana Qazaqstan is sticking with its tried and tested bike and equipment combinations. That means a third season on Wilier frames decked out with Shimano components and Corima wheels. In fact, the only real change from last season is an update to the new 12-speed R9200 Dura-Ace Di2.
Riders will have the choice of Wilier’s Zero SLR and Filante SLR road frames, with the Wilier Turbine on duty for time trial stages. Notably, the team currently equips its bikes with Dura-Ace R9100P power meter cranks. This is a trend we have seen across many teams so far this season as squads await the delivery of the new R9200P power meter.
The team relies on Vittoria tyres, Look pedals, Garmin head units, and Tacx trainers. The Astana team bikes are completed with Prologo saddles and CeramicSpeed components. All together, it is a package very familiar to the returning 2021 riders.
Bahrain Victorious
Bahrain Victorious will be hoping for a repeat of its 2021 successes and will race with almost identical equipment. Merida provides the squad with its new Scultura, the Reacto, and the Time Warp TT. Merida announced the updated Scultura last August and revealed the new Reacto in July 2020, the team will have both bikes to choose from for road stages. With Vision wheels, Continental tyres, FSA components, and Prologo saddles all on board for another season, the only significant update for 2022 is the move from 11speed to 12speed Dura-Ace Di2. The team will also rely on the new Dura-Ace R9200-P crank-based power meters.
Elite provides Bahrain-Victorious with bidons and home trainers and while the team uses Garmin head units, Garmin is not listed as an official supplier on the team website. Perhaps to the envy of many other teams, Rocket Espresso Milano, manufacturers of fine espresso machines, are also listed as a team partner.
BikeExchange- Jayco
After last year’s multi-team game of sponsor musical chairs, BikeExchange-Jayco is the only team in this year’s men’s WorldTour with a new bike supplier. Giant steps back up to the WorldTour with the Australian squad after sitting out 2021.
BikeExchange-Jayco will have the choice of Giant’s TCR Advanced SL Disc and the Propel Advanced SL Disc for road stages. The team will rely on Giant’s Trinity time trial bike for the race of truth. The Giant bikes are equipped with Shimano’s new Dura-Ace Di2 groupset. Giant also provides the team with saddles and head units while Giant’s sister components brand Cadex is on board to provide wheels and build components.
The road bike images provided to us show the team has opted for Cadex’s hookless tubeless wheel systems. Cadex’s previous WorldTour squad CCC had tubular versions of Cadex’s road wheelsets. The tubular-only Cadex time trial wheels are wrapped in Vittoria’s Corsa Speed tyres. Vittoria supplied the team with tyres last year and the Corsa Speeds are widely considered to be amongst the fastest time trial tyres.
Bora-Hansgrohe
Peter Sagan and crew might have moved on, but the Bora-Hansgrohe and Specialized partnership is alive and well for 2022. The team will again race on the S-Works Tarmac SL7. Despite the images provided showing the new frames equipped with the outgoing R9170 Dura-Ace groupset, the Bora team will race with the new Shimano R9200 12-speed Dura-Ace Di2 groupset this year. The bikes are finished with Specialized saddles, tyres, and either Roval’s Alpinist CLX or Rapide CLX wheelsets.
Interestingly, some Bora riders were already spotted testing tubeless setups on the previously clincher-only wheelsets at both the Clásica Jaén Paraíso Interior and the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. Lastly, Wahoo provides navigation and ride data with its range of Elemnt head units and smart trainers with its Kickr range.
The team will also have the choice of the S-Works Roubaix for Paris-Roubaix, and perhaps even the S-Works Aethos for the high mountain days. The team will turn to the S-Works Shiv TT Disc for time trials. Pictured above is last year’s Shiv TT.
Cofidis
Cofidis will race the 2022 season aboard De Rosa frames, just as it did last year. The team is expected to race on De Rosa’s all-rounder Merak frame for much of the season, but should also have the option of the SK Pininfarina aero bike if required.
Cofidis is second of the three Campagnolo-equipped teams for 2022. The Italian manufacturer provides the French squad with its Super Record 12-speed EPS groupsets. In one notable change from last year’s rigs, Campag’s sister brand Fulcrum is replaced as wheel supplier by Corima. Those wheels from the French brand are wrapped in French Michelin rubber, pictured here with the Power Competition tan sidewall tubular.
SRM provides the power meters with matching Campagnolo cranks. Wahoo has replaced SRM as the team’s head unit supplier, although Elite is also still on board to provide smart trainers. Vision provides its Metron integrated cockpit and the De Rosa frames feature the matching FSA ACR internal cable routing. The riders have Selle Italia saddles underneath their rear end and Look pedals under their feet.
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl
It’s as you were for the Wolfpack, who line up for another season on Specialized’s S-Works Tarmac SL7 and Shiv TT Disc models. Apart from a team-specific paint job, the all-conquering Belgian squad will have identical rigs to those of Bora-Hansgrohe. That means R9200 Dura-Ace Di2 groupsets, Roval wheels, and Specialized tyres and saddles.
In one notable change from 2021, the team will now use Garmin head units after Garmin replaced Wahoo as the team’s head unit sponsor. Tacx provides the team with trainers and bottles. As noted in our first look at who will ride what in 2022, Quick-Step has also changed clothing supplier with Castelli now decking out the men in blue.
As with Bora, the Quick-Step riders can also call upon the Specialized Roubaix for the cobbled Classics.
DSM
Team DSM is another squad which experienced major changes just over a year ago, switching from Cervelo to Scott frames. As such the team will once again rely on the Scott Addict RC, Foil aero road bike, and the Plasma TT rig. Vittoria has stayed on as tyre supplier, Pro with saddles and components, and Wahoo with head units. Again the only difference from last year is the additional sprocket with 12-speed Di2.
EF Education-EasyPost
EF Education-EasyPost continues its long term partnership with Cannondale for a further season. The team will have the Cannondale SystemSix, SuperSix and Cannondale’s new TT rig at its disposal. The bikes are equipped with Shimano’s new R9200 Di2 groupsets, Power2Max power meters, Wahoo Speedplay pedals, Vision Wheels, bars and stems, Speedplay pedals, Prologo Onetouch bar tape and Cannondale bottle cages. EF races on Vision’s Metron 40SL and 50SL wheelsets, which the team frequently runs tubeless with Vittoria tyres and Muc-Off valves. Vision also supplies EF Education-EasyPost with its Metron 6D integrated handlebar. The team recently partnered with Wahoo and now uses the brand’s Elemnt range of head units, and Kickr trainers. The team also lists Silca as a partner and we spotted some riders running the Mensola out front head unit mount at last year’s Tour de France.
Groupama-FDJ
Groupama-FDJ’s long-term partnership with Lapierre bikes rolls into another year. The team will have the new Lapierre Xelius SL3 announced just last year, the Aircode DRS aero road bike unveiled in 2020, and the Aerostorm DRS TT bike to call upon for the 2022 season.
The team is one of the few to receive full Shimano support, which means the new R9200 Dura-Ace Di2 groupset, power meter, and wheels, and Pro components. The saddles are from Italian brand Prologo. The bikes are completed with Continental tyres.
Ineos Grenadiers
Just as in every year since the team’s inception in 2010, the Ineos Grenadiers (formerly Team Sky) will race on Pinarello bikes in 2022. Pinarello released its latest iteration of the Dogma range, the new Dogma F, just prior to last year’s Tour de France and the Grenadiers will tackle the 2022 season on that new rig. One major difference for 2022 is the team’s decision to, mostly, run disc-brake bikes.
The team will race with the R9200 Di2 groupset, and so far this season seems fully committed to the new Dura-Ace wheels, something that has not always been the case. Otherwise the bikes are identical to last season, with Fizik saddles and Most components. One slight change we have noticed consistently this year is the switch from Continental’s tubular tyres, to GP5000 S TR tubeless tyres. It’s a switch we first spotted at last year’s World Championships, and is seemingly now the norm.
The team has the Pinarello Bolide TT for time trial days, while Richard Carapaz gets a gold-coloured bike to celebrate his Olympic success.
Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert-Matériaux
Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert-Matériaux will once again race on Cube bikes, a team sponsor since 2015. The riders will race on the Litening C:68x and are seemingly the last remaining team on 11-speed R9100 Dura-Ace Di2. German brand Newmen Components supplies the team wheels with fellow German brand Continental providing the tyres. Prologo supplies the teams saddles, Look the pedals, and Elite the bidons.
Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert-Matériaux is the sole squad racing with Bryton head units. CeramicSpeed is also a partner, and the bikes are fitted with the brand’s Oversize Pulley Wheel system and presumably bearings throughout.
Israel – Premier Tech
Israel-Premier Tech might have had a slight name change, but the bikes stay largely the same. The team will once again ride the Factor Ostro VAM complete with Dura-Ace Di2 groupset, albeit with Rotor cranks and Inspider power meter. Factor’s sister components and wheel brand, Black Inc, provides the team with wheelsets plus the integrated handlebar and stem. Selle Italia supplies the team with saddles and Maxxis is on board with its range of tyres. Finally, Hammerhead, recently acquired by SRAM, provides the head units.
Jumbo-Visma
Jumbo-Visma is aboard Cervelo bikes for the second successive year. After a hugely successful season last year including Grand Tour, Classics, and Olympic success, the Dutch squad will be hoping the same equipment can deliver similar success this year. The squad will once again have the choice of Cervelo’s S5 aero road bike, the new R5 all-rounder, and the P5 time trial bike. The team will also have the Cervelo Caledonia in its stable especially for Paris-Roubaix.
Wheels, groupsets, pedals, and saddles are all from Shimano’s new R9200 range. Fizik delivers the saddles, while Vittoria provides the tyres. Jumbo-Visma uses Garmin head units and Tacx supplies both the team bidons and the smart trainers.
Lotto Soudal
Lotto Soudal may be sticking with Ridley frames for the 2022 season but there are a raft of major changes that give the team bikes an entirely new look. The long-term partnership with Campagnolo is over, with the new team bikes decked out in Shimano’s new Dura-Ace Di2 groupset and DT Swiss stepping in to supply the wheelsets. It’s the first time since 2002 the Belgian squad has raced with Shimano groupsets. The team will ride with 4iiii power meters for 2022 and rely on Garmin head units to collect all the data.
The Italian connection is far from gone though: Deda supplies the integrated cockpits, Vittoria the team’s tyres, and Selle Italia the saddles. The team uses Lizard Skin bar tape and finally Look pedals.
Movistar
It’s very much as you were at Movistar. The team will ride Canyon bikes once again with the Aeroad CFR the bike of choice for road stages, while the new Speedmax CFR introduced last year is on hand for time trial days. The team races with SRAM Red Etap AXS groupsets, Zipp wheels, Look pedals, and Fizik saddles. Quarq provides the crank-based power meters, while once again Garmin is on hand with the head units.
Grip is provided by Continental tyres and Lizard Skin bar tape. Elite keeps the team watered and provides smart trainers.
Trek-Segafredo
In perhaps the least surprising news of the year, Trek-Segafredo will ride Trek bikes for another season. The team will once again have the Madone and the Emonda for the majority of the season, with the Domane and Speed Concept on hand for Roubaix and any time trials respectively. The bikes are once again kitted out with SRAM Red Etap AXS groupsets and Quarq power meters. TFS will use Wahoo head units and smart trainers in 2022.
Again unsurprisingly, Trek’s component brand Bontrager supplies the team wheels, and Pirelli, now a named sponsor, is on hand with the tyres. Bontrager also supplies the XXX stem, bottle cages, bars, and saddles. Kogel provides the bearings to keep the team rolling.
UAE Team Emirates
As they saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. With the continued and incredible success of Tadej Pogačar, UAE Team Emirates likely felt little need to change equipment suppliers. Colnago, Campagnolo, Deda, SRM, and Prologo all remain in place. The only slight change from 2021 is Pirelli replacing Vittoria as tyre supplier. Elite provides the team’s bottle cages, bidons, and home trainers.
