Speed skating star Nils van der Poel is reportedly garnering attention from cycling teams
The cycling world may have its sights set on adding another talent named Van der Poel to its ranks: Swedish speed skating star Nils van der Poel, who won two gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, is reportedly drawing interest from pro cycling teams.
Van der Poel, who won the 5,000 m and 10,000 m speed skating events in Beijing, has logged some serious mileage using cycling as a key component of his training. Earlier this month, the 25-year-old announced his retirement from speed skating.
Wielerflits reports that Jumbo-Visma wants to test Van der Poel’s cycling abilities, and that interest may not come as a surprise, considering the organization also operates a speed-skating team.
AD notes that EF Education EasyPost may be interested in Van der Poel’s services as well.
As most cycling fans will know, Van der Poel would be far from the first winter sports star to make a foray into pro road racing should he ultimately go down that path. Of the recent notables to make the switch, Primož Roglič famously transitioned from ski jumping to cycling, while Bora-Hansgrohe signed ski mountaineering talent Toni Palzer last year.
