Spanish TV cameras spot marijuana while broadcasting Vuelta a España

Spanish police said Wednesday they had seized marijuana plants growing on an apartment rooftop after they were spotted by a TV helicopter during a live broadcast of the Vuelta a España.

As the helicopter tracked the race during the final moments of the eighth stage on Saturday, the camera panned over the rooftop in Igualada in Catalonia in northeastern Spain revealing the plants spread across two plantations.

Catalonia’s regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, opened an investigation after snippets of the footage went viral on social media. Officers seized the roughly 40 marijuana plants on Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the force said.

No arrests were made when the police burst in to remove the plants and officers are still looking for the owners of the plantation, she added.

A report in Spanish newspaper ARA states that local police had previously been informed of the marijuana plantation by neighbors, who claimed the occupants had left without a trace, leaving all the furniture from the apartment on the street.

According to ARA, Spanish law does not penalize the cultivation of marijuana for self-consumption, but the regulation is ambiguous because it does not make it clear how large a “homemade plantation” can be.
