Sonny Colbrelli hospitalized after cardiac arrest
Sonny Colbrelli was hospitalized after collapsing at the finish of Volta a Catalunya’s opening stage on Monday, with the race later confirming that Colbrelli had lost consciousness and gone into cardiac arrest. As of Monday evening, his Bahrain Victorious team has said that he is in “stable” condition.
Colbrelli, who won Paris-Roubaix and the European Continental road title in 2021, had recently missed a planned start at Milan-San Remo over the weekend as he dealt with bronchitis. He nonetheless was back to racing on Monday in Sant Feliu de Guíxols for the Volta a Catalunya.
On the opening stage, he rode to second place behind Michael Matthews before collapsing, suffering convulsions and temporarily losing consciousness. Medical personnel performed CPR on the 31-year-old Italian at the scene.
After receiving medical attention, he was taken to Hospital Universitari de Girona.
As VeloNews reports, Colbrelli is “conscious and talking” as of Monday evening.
