Sonny Colbrelli has returned home to Italy for further cardiac tests

Bahrain Victorious has confirmed that their rider Sonny Colbrelli has returned to his native Italy five days after suffering a cardiac arrhythmia at the end of stage 1 of the Volta a Catalunya.

“Sonny Colbrelli returned to Italy after being transferred from the Hospital Universitari de Girona yesterday,” read the statement from Bahrain Victorious. “Given the stable clinical conditions, Sonny Colbrelli was given clearance to travel to Italy.”

The 2021 Paris-Roubaix champion had a strong start to 2022 before coming down with bronchitis, which forced him to pull out of Paris-Nice and cancel his appearance at Milan-San Remo. His next race was the Volta a Catalunya where his form looked well and truly back as he finished a narrow second to Michael Matthews on stage 1. However, he collapsed moments later and the on-race medical personnel had to administer CPR.

“The athlete, who collapsed shortly after finishing stage 1 of the Volta a Catalunya, was given immediate emergency care and then transported to the hospital to undergo examinations and investigate the cause of the unstable cardiac arrhythmia that required defibrillation.”

The 31-year-old stayed at the Hospital Universitari de Girona all week to recover and undergo tests in an effort to discover why the Italian collapsed. As of Saturday and his return to Italy, the cause of Colbrelli’s collapse in Sant Feliu de Guíxols remained undetermined, albeit with ‘no signs of concern’.

“Further examinations will be carried out in the upcoming days in an Italian center of excellence for the diagnosis and therapy of cardiovascular diseases,” the team’s statement concluded. “Until then, everybody at Team Bahrain Victorious wishes Sonny a quick recovery surrounded by the love of his family.”
