Slop and slide: International CX season opens in muddy Melbourne
The 2019/20 international cyclocross season got underway last weekend with the Melbourne Grand Prix of Cyclocross (Melbourne GPCX). Now in its third year, the 2019 Melbourne GPCX was held over two days at the State Motorcycle Complex in Broadford, roughly an hour north of Melbourne.
The event is Australia’s only international cyclocross event and this year’s edition attracted some of Australia’s best CX racers. Among them were freshly crowned national champions Peta Mullens (Focus/Attaquer) and Chris Jongewaard (Flanders/health.com.au), who both went on to win on both Saturday and Sunday.
As you can see from Ernesto Arriagada’s great photos below, it was a wet and muddy weekend out at Broadford, offering conditions more familiar to European CX racers than those from Australia.
