Simon Yates will ride on with Mitchelton as Adam’s status remains unclear

Mitchelton-Scott has announced that Simon Yates will ride on with the squad through 2022, and at least for now, he is the only Yates brother confirmed to be staying with the team after this season.

The winner of the 2018 Vuelta a España, Simon Yates has been with the team since turning pro there back in 2014. The 28-year-old Briton is set to lead the team’s general classification push at this year’s Giro d’Italia.

“We have had a lot of success together, and I just want to continue that going forward, mainly at the Grand Tours,” Yates said in a team press release. “We won our first Grand Tour two years ago and I truly believe we can do it again so we will keep working hard so we can take another one.”

As Mitchelton-Scott’s press release points out, the Yates extension comes after a renewed commitment by team owner Gerry Ryan. After the team’s scuttled arrangement with the Manuela Fundación, Ryan confirmed that he would continue to support the squad for a further two years.

Particularly noteworthy from the team’s announcement of the contract extension is its focus on just one rider. Simon and his brother Adam Yates have ridden alongside each other at the Mitchelton organization since they first joined the then-Orica-GreenEdge team together. In 2016 and again in 2018, the team announced contract extensions for both riders at the same time.

That’s not the case in 2020. At the moment, only Simon is known to be staying with the team, with rumors suggesting that Adam Yates is weighing offers from other teams.
