Sastre, Vos, O’Grady and Tenniglo to ride the 2019 Giro della Donna
We may be biased but we think the Giro della Donna is something special. It was born from wanting to create an event we would want to ride. As a result it is one of the most beautiful rides in one of the country’s most beautiful places. And it seems the word is spreading …
Last year we were fortunate enough to be joined by Alberto Contador, whose smile and enthusiasm were infectious. So it’s with absolute delight that we can announce another Tour de France winner joining us in 2019. Carlos Sastre is making the trip out next month and – as icing on the cake – is reuniting with his road captain from his 2008 Tour win, Stuart O’Grady.
No stranger to the mountains, Sastre is one of the great Grand Tour riders of his generation, with stage victories and podium places in the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a Espana, alongside a Tour de France win forged on the brutal slopes of Alpe d’Huez. Having O’Grady back alongside Sastre at the Giro della Donna will also be something a bit special, and no doubt Stuey’s rough-road prowess (he won Paris-Roubaix after all) will come in handy as he rides the Gravel Giro on the Saturday and the Acheron Way as part of the Giro della Donna on the Sunday.
But we’re not stopping there — we are more than delighted to announce that Marianne Vos returns after riding with us back in 2017. Vos is the finest racer of a generation or more and having her ride the weekend with us once more is a real privilege. Even better, Vos’ compatriot Moniek Tenniglo is also joining us. Part of the Dutch contingent on the Mitchelton-Scott team, Tenniglo is as articulate off the bike as on and guaranteed to delight.
Of course, it is not all about time on the bike. As well as riding the Gravel Giro and the Giro della Donna, our guests will be joining us at the Coppi Dinner on Saturday night, dining in the Yarra Valley with the finest of local produce.
Just a reminder that VeloClub members receive $49 off their entry for the 2019 Giro della Donna. To find out more (or to sign up!) head to our info page here.
When we dreamt up the concept behind the Giro della Donna it was a simple one. “Let’s show a bunch of our readers one of our favourite places in the world to ride”. From those humble beginnings, it’s grown into its fifth edition, attracting thousands of cyclists and a solid handful of current and former pros. We’re thrilled to see where the event heads over the next few years!
