Russian and Belarusian teams banned from competing at the 2022 World Championships

Shortly after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) released a statement recommending Russian and Belarusian athletes and teams be banned from international competition AusCycling announced that, as things stand, athletes from the two nations would not be permitted to compete at the World Championships in Wollongong in September.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) agreed with the IOC’s stance on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Monday.

“We all want peace and for Russia to immediately withdraw from Ukraine,” AOC Chief Executive Officer Matt Carrol said in a statement. “We are certainly urging our member sports not to invite teams or athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus or rescind any invitations that may have been issued and to withdraw Australian athletes and officials from any sports events where Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials may be participating.”

The only significant international bike race to take place in Australia in 2022 is the upcoming World Championships from September 18 to 25. AusCycling told Cyclingnews, “we will continue to discuss the situation with the UCI and other relevant authorities, but at this stage and consistent with the approach of the IOC, AOC and other Australian sports, no Russian or Belarusian national teams would be permitted to compete.”
