Rod Ellingworth is leaving Bahrain-McLaren
Rod Ellingworth, who joined Bahrain-McLaren as team principal last season after several years with the Sky/Ineos organization, is leaving the Bahrain team.
Bahrain-McLaren announced the news in a press release on Thursday.
“The time has come for me to move on,” Ellingworth said in a statement.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the chance to lead this team. There has been some fantastic momentum, and I feel I leave the team in a strong position. We’ve worked well together in this global pandemic to keep racing and have achieved some fantastic results.”
In its press release, the team said that “Rod’s passion is rider development, so he has decided to move on and focus on new projects close to his heart.”
Ellingworth’s tenure with the squad will thus end only 14 months after he came aboard following several successful years working with British Cycling and Sky. Between 2013 and 2019, he was the performance director for the Sky team that later became Ineos.
His arrival at the Bahrain team coincided with a significant roster overhaul, as the team bid farewell to the likes of Vincenzo Nibali and Rohan Dennis and signed Mikel Landa, Wout Poels, and Mark Cavendish, among others.
“We’ve worked well together in this global pandemic to keep racing and have achieved some fantastic results,” Ellingworth said in the statement. “The team has pulled together and tried hard to keep everyone safe. The team were united through tough times, and it was a pleasure to be part of it. One of the highlights for me was achieving a fourth place in the general classification at the Tour de France.”
