Rider claims tenth place after running across finish line

US amateur racer Eamon Lucas racing for Belgian team ‘Shifting Gears-Geldhof Jielker’ came in 10th place on Friday in the 2019 the edition of Gullegem Kermesse, west of the better known towns of Kuurne and Harelbeke.

A solid result for the 26 year old from California in his second season racing in Belgium. He’s best known for his Red Hook Crit racing profile with team Specialized/Rocket-Espresso.

But this breakthrough result for Lucas wasn’t as straight as forward most races tend to go. Lucas said on social media after finishing the 105km kermesse in 10th place, “Never say never. A emotional last 300 meters. I was unfortunately crashed out of the front group of 10 riders today in the last 250 meters. I was very happy with the form and fitness. But I was not happy to be sliding across the ground that’s to say the least.

“After I can to a stop I jumped up and RAN TO THE FINISH LINE. Founding out the top ten here in my first race back in Belgium.”

The Gullegem Kermesse is classified as a 1.12B, which is a standard non-pro race. UCI rules normally stipulate that a rider needs to cross the finish line with his or her bike, however Lucas’ 10th place result stood.

Earlier in the week Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) won the 75th pro edition of Gullegem Koerse on Tuesday. In the last five kilometers of the 171-kilometer kermesse, the Belgian national champion only attacked and held it to the end.
