Reactions: The peloton congratulates Cavendish
Five years after his last Tour de France stage win, Mark Cavendish (Deceunick-QuickStep) sprinted to victory on Tuesday in a town that he had already seen before from atop the winner’s podium. The victory was one that seemed far, far away just eight months ago, after he left the Gent-Wevelgem media zone in tears having admitted that it may have been his last race as a professional.
Social media collectively lost its mind when Cavendish crossed the finish line first in Fougères and, about an hour later, the peloton’s tweets poured in with their own congratulations. Below is collection of those messages and we dare you not to cry while reading them. Enjoy!

I've seen Cav at his very best & I've seen him work so hard through his toughest moments. And even I didn't expect that today. This sport knocks you down time & again but if you keep getting back up it can reward you in incredible ways. Cav always gets back up. Proud of you mate pic.twitter.com/tpQAVzXTvu

When sporting greats fade, you question whether the standards have increased, whether that athlete would have won in the modern era, even at their peak.

Mark Cavendish has now beaten three generations of the best sprinters, on the biggest stage. No more questions needed.
Cav winning brings on so much nostalgia and I’m here for it. To be honest, after the last three days, I feel like the entire cycling community is here for it. Simpler times!

Disappointed I could not deliver a 3rd victory in a row for the team. It’s always nice to fight out some fair sprints with a true legend @MarkCavendish. We go again! #TDF2021 pic.twitter.com/ERaLmIINVi
