Rapha Foundation announces second round of grantees
The Rapha Foundation has announced the four organizations that have received a total of $750,000 in what was the second round of grants for the program.
The grantees are the Cyclists’ Alliance, the Rayner Foundation (formerly the Dave Rayner Fund), Helen100, and the Herne Hill Velodrome Trust. All four recipients are UK- or Europe-based, following a first round of grants focused on US-based organizations.
The Rapha Foundation’s stated mission is “to build a better future for the sport of cycling by inspiring, empowering and supporting the next generation of racers,” with a focus on developing underserved sectors of cycling.
The Cyclists’ Alliance was started in 2017 by retired racers Iris Slappendell and Carmen Small and active pro Gracie Elvin as a labor organization representing women’s pro road cyclists. The Rapha grant will be used to the expand services the organization provides as well as boosting resources to raise awareness of the organization.
The Rayner Foundation, founded in memory of former pro Dave Rayner, helps support young riders starting their racing careers. Some big names in today’s pro peloton are among those who have received support from the foundation, including Adam Yates, Hannah Barnes, Tao Geoghegan Hart, and Dan McLay.
Helen Wyman’s Helen100 initiative works to create opportunities for young women in cyclocross. The organization runs coaching clinics that connect juniors with veteran pros, as well as the Helen100 Trophy, which has created junior women’s races within major international events. Helen100 also provides grants for Worlds travel to young women from countries with limited funding, and reimburses entry fees for under-23 women racing the UK national championships.
The Herne Hill Velodrome Trust is the charity that operates South London’s Herne Hill Velodrome, which dates back to 1891. The Rapha Foundation grant will be directed towards adding a youth development officer and to support other roles already working towards developing young riders and the local community both on the track and off-road.
The next round of grantees will again be focused on US-based organizations but organizations in Europe, the United States, and the Asia-Pacific region are eligible to apply for the grants, provided they are registered charities.
