Races in Valencia and the Basque Country join the growing list of postponed events

Organizers of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana announced on Thursday that both the men’s and women’s races have been postponed, while the Itzulia Women’s Race in the Basque Country has been listed as postponed on the UCI’s Women’s WorldTour calendar.

The events in Spain join a growing list of races that have been called off due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana men’s stage race was set to run from February 3 to 7, and big names like Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) and Vincenzo Nibali (Trek-Segafredo) had been expected to attend. The one-day women’s event was scheduled for February 7. Both races are now postponed, with no set date for rescheduling yet announced.

Yet another race in Valencia, the women’s Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, has been taken off of the UCI’s calendar after originally having been scheduled to run from February 18 to 21.

The changes remove even more events from the early-season slate following the cancellations of the Tour Down Under, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, the Herald Sun Tour, the Vuelta a San Juan, the Tour Colombia, the Mallorca Challenge races, the Saudi Tour, and the Tour of Oman, to name only some of the 2021 events cancelled thus far, as well as the postponement of the Volta ao Algarve and the Vuelta a Andalucía.

While the organizers of the Itzulia Women’s race have not announced its postponement so clearly as the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, it too appears to have been postponed, now being listed as such at the UCI website.

The first women’s edition of the race had been set to run from May 14 to 16 at the WorldTour level.

With the Ronde van Drenthe also listed as postponed and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race cancelled for 2021, the Women’s WorldTour calendar is down to 21 events with set dates for now.
