Promising professional cyclist Desiet Kidane Tekeste, 21, was killed by a driver while training near the Eritrean capital of Asmara.

Kidane rode for the UCI’s World Cycling Centre Continental team, a spot earned after promising results at the junior level. She won a gold medal in both the time trial and road race at the 2018 Junior African Continental Championships.

Details of the incident have not yet been released.

“With her constant smile, kindness, respect and deep passion for cycling, Desiet Kidane Tekeste was a rising young talent who will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and teammates and coaches during this tragic time,” the UCI wrote in a statement Tuesday.

Kidane rode a European-based program in 2021, including the world championships in Belgium and a number of high-profile races like the Baloise Ladies Tour and Binche-Chimay-Binche.

CyclingTips extends condolences to Desiet’s friends, family, and teammates at this sad time.
