Primoz Roglic won the first summit finish of the 2020 Tour de France, out-kicking his rivals in the final hundred meters of the ascent to Orcières-Merlette.

Roglic’s Jumbo-Visma team pushed a high tempo on the first-category climb, whittling down the GC group while discouraging any attacks, and a select group was still together at the front into the final kilometer. Guillaume Martin tried to go from a few hundred meters out but was brought back. When he kicked again with 200 meters to go, Roglic responded emphatically, surging past. Tadej Pogacar tried to match his Slovenian compatriot’s speed but there was no catching Roglic, who nabbed the stage 4 victory at the line.

Pogacar took runner-up honors with Martin finishing third just ahead of Nairo Quintana. Juilan Alaphilippe finished in fifth place, maintaining his hold on yellow. Most of the other GC notables – including Egan Bernal, Tom Dumoulin, and Thibaut Pinot – finished on the same time as the race leader, but reigning Giro d’Italia champ Richard Carapaz lost time on the day, hitting the line 28 seconds down.
