Primoz Roglic extends with Jumbo-Visma through 2023
Jumbo-Visma has announced a lengthy contract extension for Primoz Roglic. The 29-year-old Slovenian will ride on with the Dutch WorldTour outfit through the 2023 season.
“We have now reached a nice level together and I really believe that we can achieve even more,” Roglic said. “I have won some races in recent years, but you always aim for more and for the highest.”
Roglic is the current overall leader at the Vuelta a España and has been one of the sport’s most successful riders this year, continuing a steady development that has stretched back several seasons now.
Roglic spent his early years on the road with the Adria Mobil Continental team after transitioning from a career as a ski jumper. He moved up to the WorldTour level with the then LottoNL-Jumbo squad (now Jumbo-Visma) in 2016, and quickly showed his potential with a time trial stage win at the Giro d’Italia. He has continued to impress ever since, relying on a powerful TT engine and impressive climbing legs.
He has won multiple stages at all three Grand Tours, he finished fourth overall at last year’s Tour de France and third overall at this year’s Giro, and he is currently the overwhelming favorite to win the Vuelta. His one-week racing exploits have been especially impressive. Just in 2019 he has won the UAE Tour, Tirreno-Adriatico, and the Tour de Romandie.
His four-year contract extension stands out as a long one for a pro bike racer.
“Primoz has developed enormously in recent years as a person and as an athlete, just like the team,” said Jumbo-Visma sports director Merijn Zeeman. “In the coming years we will continue to jointly focus on growing and getting better in all possible areas.”
Roglic is part of a strong core at Jumbo-Visma, a team that in recent years has emerged as one of the top teams in the sport after a long stretch of seasons finishing towards the back end of the WorldTour rankings. Alongside Steven Kruijswijk, Roglic has given the team a Grand Tour contender to build around. The team’s stage racing firepower will only grow next season with the addition of Dutch powerhouse Tom Dumoulin.
With all three of Kruijswijk, Roglic, and Dumoulin now contracted for multiple seasons moving forward and a strong squad of support riders in place, Jumbo-Visma is hoping to be competitive across the Grand Tour racing calendar moving forward.
As for Roglic himself, he figures to continue getting his chances to shine with the squad considering how well he has performed there so far, even with those big names around him on the roster.
“The most important argument for staying is that I get opportunities here,” he said. “I like to win. I have that option within this team. So I didn’t have to think about it for long. I feel at home here, so why not?”
