Preview: What you need to know about stage 8 of the 2022 Giro d'Italia
Date: Saturday May 14
Start: Napoli
Finish: Napoli
Distance: 153 km
An interesting stage that features four laps of the Monte di Procida peninsula circuit, and a section where the riders retrace their steps back into Napoli. There are plenty of little ascents throughout the day (2,130 metres of climbing in total) but this seems like it’s destined to end in a bunch sprint, perhaps from a reduced bunch.
Who’s it for: Fast finishers who aren’t fazed by a bit of climbing.
Dane Cash’s picks: This profile has a real Classics feel to it, so it’s hard not to like two riders on the start list who have taken Classics wins this year: Biniam Girmay and Mathieu van der Poel. Van der Poel may be more likely to handle the climbs, while Girmay probably has a better sprint. The versatile Magnus Cort is another potential favorite.
Caleb Ewan will certainly be worth watching, while Mark Cavendish, Arnaud Démare, and Fernando Gaviria will have a shot too.
