Distance: 196 km
With 4,510 metres of elevation gain, this is the most climbing of any stage so far. It’s a tough day across the Southern Apennines that starts out easily enough with a coastal jaunt, before four categorised ascents and plenty more climbing besides. The finish is a little tricky: 350 metres at 8% with a maximum grade of 13%.
Who’s it for: Looks like a perfect day for the breakaway.
Dane Cash’s picks: As ever for breakaway-friendly stages like this, naming contenders is very hard. Plenty of riders well-suited the to profile will not get up the road, meaning that while Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) is a decent pick, it’s hard to say he’s the favorite with much confidence. Magnus Cort (EF Education-EasyPost), who has a history of getting to Grand Tour breaks, may be a bit more likely to get up the road and then shine in a reduced sprint finish.
Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates), who has a pretty remarkable track record of accruing Giro stage wins, is another strong pick for the day. Mauro Schmid (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), the obviously in-form Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe), and Attila Valter (Groupama-FDJ) are others to watch on stage 7.
