Preview: What you need to know about stage 5 of the 2022 Vuelta a España

Date: Wednesday August 24
Start: Irun
Finish: Bilbao
Distance: 187.2 km

A tricky medium mountain stage in the Basque Country featuring a total of five climbs. Two of those climbs are the second-category Alto del Vivero, which the riders will crest with 43 km and 14 km to go. At 4.6 km long and an average of 8% this is a punchy climb that could offer the perfect opportunity for a late move.

With Roglič now in red, Jumbo-Visma would be happy to control the race and let a break take the sting out of the day. For Trek-Segafredo’s Mads Pedersen, second for the third day running and looking super strong on the uphill kick to the line on stage four, he’ll be looking to hoover up more green jersey points and also take a so-far elusive stage win. Julian Alaphillippe (Quick-Step AlphaVinyl) also briefly showed his intent on stage four’s final classified climb.

Who’s it for: This one feels like it could be a day for the breakaway. Look for someone to attack late from that break.
