Preview: What you need to know about stage 12 of the 2022 Giro d'Italia
Date: Thursday May 19
Start: Parma
Finish: Genova
Distance: 204 km
A reasonably challenging stage defined by three Cat 3 climbs. The last of those, Valico di Trensasco, is likely to be the most important. It’s 4.3 km at a punchy 8% and it peaks around 30 km from the finish – a lovely little launchpad for a daring opportunist.
Who’s it for: A bit of a tricky one to predict. Could be one for the breakaway, could be a reduced bunch sprint, could be a small group or solo winner with a late move. A wide-open stage.
Dane Cash’s picks: Mathieu van der Poel is the top pick for the day, but there really isn’t any one overwhelming favorite head and shoulders above the field. Outside of Van der Poel – or including Van der Poel, if he decides to jump into the break – I think the attackers have a good chance on the day, although naming specific contenders there is hard.
Still, the likes of Maruo Schmid, Alessandro Covi, Lennard Kamna, Thomas De Gendt, and maybe even Simon Yates are worth watching on this undulating parcours.
