Pogacar set for Tour debut as UAE announces 2020 Grand Tour plans
UAE Team Emirates has laid out the 2020 Grand Tour plans of its marquee riders. The team announced on Tuesday that Fabio Aru, Fernando Gaviria, and Tadej Pogacar will all race next year’s Tour de France.
The race will mark the Tour debut of rising star Pogacar. The 21-year-old Slovenian rode to three stage victories and third overall at the 2019 Vuelta a España, his first Grand Tour during his first season at the WorldTour level.
“At the Tour de France we will go with Pogacar, who will race without any pressure, taking the race day by day,” Aru will focus more on the GC and Gaviria will have his chances in the sprint.”
Aru will look to get back on track after a few frustrating seasons marred by health issues, while Gaviria will be returning to the Tour after missing this summer’s race due to injury problems of his own.
The team will send Alexander Kristoff to the Giro d’Italia, where he has not raced since 2012. Multi-time stage winner Diego Ulissi will also hunt for stage wins while Davide Formolo, who has twice finished in the Giro top 10, will lead the GC charge.
Formolo, David de la Cruz, and up-and-coming sprint talent Jasper Philipsen will race next year’s Vuelta a España.
