A key climbing domestique for Tadej Pogačar, Soler was out the back early in stage 16 as the peloton headed for the first of two Cat.1 climbs in the Pyrenees between Carcassonne and Foix. He was seen at the race medical car and then again at a team vehicle after he vomited, unable to keep anything down.
According to reporter Borja Cuadrado, UAE team boss Mauro Gianetti confirmed that Soler had been told to get off the bike during the stage, but he was determined to carry on. The Spaniard made it to the finish, but he was 15 minutes outside the time limit so will not start stage 17.
With Soler’s withdrawal following Vegard Stake Laengen and George Bennett earlier in the Tour, UAE Team Emirates is now down to five riders, with Pogačar’s mountain support dented further going into the final two Pyrenean stages.
