Pogačar confirms his plans to race Flanders and the Vuelta in a busy 2022 season
Tadej Pogacar has confirmed his intent to race both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España and four Monuments in 2022 at his UAE Team Emirates training camp in Calpe, Spain.
Affirming what has been reported since December, Pogačar said that he plans to race Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Il Lombardia this season in addition to his Grand Tour objectives. The 23-year-old Slovenian won both Liège and Lombardia last year, while 2022 will mark his debut in Flanders.
“I probably won’t be the leader, it’s my first Tour of Flanders ever,” Pogačar said, as VeloNews reports. “We have riders for the classics, like [Matteo] Trentin and others. So I’m just there to observe, to get some experience and try my best and be good for the team.”
Pogačar further clarified that simply racing four Monuments “doesn’t mean I’m focusing to win all of them.” At the same time, he also noted that he would one day “like to try all five, also Paris-Roubaix,” although “not in the near future.”
The Tour de France, of course, remains Pogacar’s primary objective of 2022. He will be hunting for a third straight title in the French Grand Tour this July.
Pogačar’s very busy 2022 campaign will get underway at the UAE Tour, which starts on February 20.
