You don’t need to be a penny-pincher to know that, if you’re smart about it, buying used can save you some serious coin. Trust me, you probably don’t want to go the secondhand route if you’re looking for underwear or a toothbrush but, when it comes to mountain bikes, you might be able to find your dream machine for a fraction of its original – and ridiculous – asking price.
New-to-you sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Totally … until the warranty-less chainstays decide to separate into three pieces. Or you’re looking at a bill to replace the entire drivetrain. Or to replace the fork.
Buying a used mountain bike might be one of the smartest things you’ve ever done, but it could also be one of the worst. Today’s Field Trip video is all about how to examine a used bike so you don’t accidentally trade your Xbox for a lemon.

With both the Taipei Cycle Show and Sea Otter on hiatus this year, it was looking like slim pickings for us technophiles curious about what’s coming and how it works. But COVID-19 can’t put the brakes on something that doesn’t actually exist, can it? Enter our virtual tradeshow, Pond Beaver 2020, where fresh gear was covered from an acceptable social distance. And with plenty of new soft goods, components, and suspension, along with a few new bikes, there’s still a lot for us to yammer about.

A huge thank you to everyone who’s been checking out our Pond Beaver coverage. I hope you’ve enjoyed it! With the whole world at various levels of lockdown this spring, we knew we wanted to do something to keep everyone at home informed while we’re missing out on trade shows.
We had a ton of fun making Pond Beaver happen, and it seems like it was pretty well received. We had more videos, more articles, significantly more reads, and nearly double the comments compared to last year’s spring trade shows.

The Sea Otter Classic was supposed to be this weekend. There will be no perusing of new bikes and parts, no oddities and random gadgets to ogle. Perhaps most heartbreaking is that there will be no Dual Slalom, which to many is the main event of Sea Otter. No sunburns and poison oak.
It’s funny the little things you remember with fondness, even when they can be rather irritating. So here’s a little montage of shots from the last couple years down in Monterey for those of you feeling like there’s a bit of an empty spot in your life this weekend.

Video: Stefan Mueller Turns His Bike into a Lawnmower in Self-Isolation

Is this the best #stayathomebikechallenge yet? Stefan Mueller has converted his bike into a lawnmower so he can keep fit, do chores and obey lockdown at the same time.
While we imagine this probably isn’t covered under warranty, it’s great to see Stefan getting creative while under lockdown and also wearing a helmet to ensure his local health service isn’t overwhelmed if he has a crash.
First Ride: Hutchinson’s New Kraken XC Tire

The Kraken is designed to be a complementary tire to Hutchinson’s Skeleton tire, with the Kraken being used in the front, although it can be used as a rear tire as well. The tire is available in a 29″ x 2.3″ size with two different casing options, a lightweight 127 TPI and a more versatile 66 TPI. The sidewalls utilize Hutchinson’s Hardskin reinforcement and the tires sell for US$79.99.
