Peter Sagan did not start Tirreno-Adriatico stage 3 due to illness
Peter Sagan’s season continued to hit bumps in the road on Wednesday. The former world champion was forced to abandon Tirreno-Adriatico before the third stage started due to illness. Sagan apparently woke up with a fever and was vomiting on the way to the start of the stage.
The TotalEnergies rider finished fourth on the second day of Tirreno-Adriatico, a stage won by Tim Merlier. His ‘opening weekend’ was subpar. At Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Sagan finished just 98th, a race he has finished second in twice, while in Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne he was outside the top 100.
Sagan had a slower start to the season after dealing with a second round of COVID-19 over the winter holidays. “I was really out for seven days,” Sagan said at team camp in January. “It didn’t last as long as the first time I got it, but it was tough.”
Sagan’s team has yet to comment on whether or not the illness will impact his build-up to Milan-Sanremo on March 19.
