Olympic TT champ Roglič won't race Worlds TT

A month and a half after winning an Olympic gold medal in the individual time trial, Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) would have been among the top favorites for the upcoming elite men’s TT event at the UCI Road World Championships – but he won’t be making the start.

The 31-year-old, who recently won his third straight Vuelta a España title, is expected to participate in the road race the following weekend, but Slovenia will apparently look elsewhere for the TT battle at Worlds in Flanders as Roglič will sit the event out.

On the bright side, Slovenian fans still have plenty to look forward to on Sunday when the elite men’s TT kicks off the week of racing, as Tadej Pogačar and Jan Tratnik are expected to make the start for the 43.3 km race on mostly flat roads from Knokke-Heist to Bruges.

Roglič may be the reigning Olympic champ, and he did score a silver medal in the TT at Worlds back in 2017, but Pogačar has bested his compatriot in the discipline on more than one occasion, with two time trial stage wins in the last two Tours de France. Perhaps a bit surprisingly, Sunday will mark Pogačar’s first career start in the Worlds TT event.

However things go for the Slovenian selection this weekend, Roglič and Pogačar will join forces a week later, riding alongside Luka Mezgec, Matej Mohorič, Domen Novak, Jan Polanc, and David Per in the road race.
