New calendar revisions move Il Lombardia to August 15

After weeks of ongoing talks with organizers, national federations, and other stakeholders, and following a meeting of its Management Committee, the UCI confirmed further revisions to the already revised 2020 calendar in a statement on Friday.

Perhaps most notable among the dates announced are those of Italian Monuments Milan-San Remo and Il Lombardia, which are set to take place on August 8 and August 15, respectively. The announcement marks a confirmation of the originally rescheduled date for Milan-San Remo despite discussions about possibly moving the race again. Meanwhile, Il Lombardia has been moved up a month and a half from its initially rescheduled date of October 31. The revision does create an overlap between Il Lombardia and the Critérium du Dauphiné, but allows the following weekend to be used for national championship events.

The UCI also added Hamburg’s EuroEyes Cyclassics back to the calendar after spending time finding a suitable new date for the German one-day, which will now take place on October 3 as Germany’s only WorldTour race this year following the cancellation of Eschborn-Frankfurt. Additionally, the men’s Tour of Guangxi has been pushed back from its initially rescheduled start date of October 15 to November 5.

The one-day Women’s Tour of Guangxi has been moved as well, from October 20 to November 10.

The UCI also updated the status of various world championship events, noting that there would be no junior track Worlds in 2020, and also clarifying that any reigning world champions whose events are cancelled this season will be able to continue wearing their respective rainbow jerseys until their Worlds events are held.

Also included in the governing body’s statement was a confirmation of the upcoming transition of anti-doping activities from the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF) to the International Testing Agency (ITA). The CADF, which has overseen anti-doping efforts for the UCI since 2008, will transfer those duties to the ITA on January 1 of 2021. According to the statement, “a unit dedicated to cycling within the ITA, composed of former CADF employees, will take care of the implementation of the UCI’s anti-doping program, with the support and expertise of all departments of the ITA.”
