Milan-San Remo postponed

One day after calling off plans to run Strade Bianche this weekend, organizer RCS Sport has postponed several more upcoming events, including one of its biggest races: Milan-San Remo.

The lengthy Italian Monument was originally scheduled to take place on March 21, but RCS has cancelled plans to hold it, as well as Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour of Sicily, on their expected dates. The decision comes following legislation in Italy that puts serious limits on public events in the face of coronavirus concerns. Nearly 4,000 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Italy thus far.

The RCS says it will try to reschedule the races.

“RCS Sport will request the UCI, via the Italian Cycling Federation, to allocate new dates on the international cycling calendar for the three races, as has already been requested for Strade Bianche and Strade Bianche Women Elite,” read a statement announcing the news.

For now, specific dates for rescheduling have not yet been announced.

Milan-San Remo dates back to 1907, and has been held every year since but three: The race was cancelled in 1916 due to World War I and in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II. Tirreno-Adriatico has been run continuously since its first edition in 1966, while the RCS revived the Tour of Sicily last season after a hiatus of more than 40 years.
