Michael Woods crashes out of the Vuelta on stage 3

Michael Woods is the first big name to be forced out of the 2022 Vuelta a España following a crash during stage 3.

The Canadian’s teammate, the sprinter Itamar Einhorn, was also caught in the same crash but was able to race on. The Israel national champion came off much better than his GC leader who seemed to be nursing a blow to his forehead, leading to concerns that Woods might have suffered a concussion or an eye injury, either of which would seriously impair his ability to continue safely.

This marks his second Grand Tour abandon of the 2022 season after a COVID-19 positive prevented him from starting the final stage of the Tour de France.

Woods is the second rider to abandon the Vuelta, following Steff Cras who suffered fractures to his elbow, scaphoid and finger in a high-speed crash on stage 2. The 26-year-old Belgian was Lotto Soudal’s best hope for a top-10 finish at the last Grand Tour of the season.

The team later provided an update that confirmed a concussion and abrasions for Woods, who will now travel home to recover.
