McCabe will join Israel Cycling Academy in 2020
Travis McCabe will join Israel Cycling Academy next season on a one-year deal.
The 30-year-old American sprinter, one of the most successful riders on the US domestic circuit in recent years, will make the transfer after one year at the Floyd’s Pro Cycling Team, which is closing shop at the end of 2019. The move sets McCabe up for a debut season racing at the WorldTour level, with Israel Cycling Academy buying out Katusha-Alpecin ahead of 2020.
“ICA has always raced in the States and I feel like I have always competed against the guys in
international races as well, so it is pretty cool to finally come aboard, especially now that Israel Cycling Academy has made the step up to WorldTour,” McCabe said in the team’s press release announcing the news.
“I want to prove to myself and others that I have always belonged in Europe racing at the top level and so I am really looking forward to the what the future within the Academy holds.”
McCabe’s career palmares includes four stage wins at the Tour of Utah and three at the Tour de Langkawi, as well as a one-day race victory at the 2014 Winston-Salem Classic. He raced at the Pro Continental level in 2017 and 2018 with UnitedHealthcare before that team shut down and he joined Floyd’s for 2019.
McCabe will slot in as one of several fast finishers at Israel Cycling Academy. German sprint star André Greipel will also join the squad for 2020, while Kristian Sbaragli, Davide Cimolai, and Tom van Asbroeck are others with sprint experience. Team manager Kjell Carlström said McCabe would “get his own chances in some races for sure,” while also playing a support role at other times.
“So my goals for 2020 are to first and foremost be a valuable teammate and ambassador for Israel Cycling Academy, but I also want to prove myself over in Europe,” McCabe said.
“I hope to do that by getting my first European victory in the colors of ICA and to hopefully race the classics and possibly a Grand Tour.”
