Daniel Martínez powered to the first Grand Tour stage win of his career on a challenging stage 13 of the Tour de France as Egan Bernal lost time in the GC battle to Primoz Roglic and Tadej Pogacar.
The 191.5-kilometer journey from Châtel-Guyon to Pas de Peyrol saw a select group of breakaway riders fight for the stage victory as the GC hopefuls battled for seconds a few minutes later. Martínez rode much of the finale alongside Lennard Kamna with Kamna’s Bora-Hansgrohe teammate the lone rider off the front, but Martínez gradually closed down the gap on the steep Puy Mary finishing climb. With two kilometers to go the catch was made, and then Martínez and Kämna pressed on to battle for the stage win between themselves. Martínez took an impressive victory at the line with Kämna settling for second and Schachmann taking third.
A few minutes down the mountain, a torrid pace from Jumbo-Visma blew the GC group apart, with Bernal finding himself in difficulty that became a real gap when Pogacar put in a big surge at the front. Roglic was the only one who could follow his compatriot, and Bernal was unable to keep the pace even with the first group of GC chasers, which included Richie Porte, Mikel Landa, and Miguel Ángel López. Roglic and Pogacar would ultimately pick up 38 seconds on Bernal, with Pogacar now moving into second overall.
