Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: the best of week 4

The 2019 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards are into their final days. You’ve got until January 5 to get your entry in, so don’t delay – there are categories for every type of photographer and equipment, and all entry fees go to a great cause.

Head here for all the details on how to get involved.

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve posted showcases of some of our favourite shots; here’s the best of week four.

This week’s feature image is from Gary Hibbert @Galerie167 in the Enthusiast category: ‘Checking out the competition… Mathieu van der Poel leads the peloton through the rain. A day when even the strong men were beaten.’

After the competition closes our panel of professional photographer judges – Pauline Ballet, Simon Wilkinson, and Chris Auld – will deliberate on who’ll take out the honours, along with prizes from our generous sponsors:

Professional category

Entry into the fiercely-contested Professional category is permitted for anyone who earns a living from his or her cycling photography. Entrants this year will be competing for the coveted title of Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year, with the winner taking home $2,500 AUD in cash.

Benedict Campbell @benedict13: ‘”The last charge” tdf19.’

Jean-Pierre Ronco @imagewriterphotography: ‘As professional photographer, we really enjoy our work. Here is a photo of our main office, following cycling events in amazing location (Mt Buffalo – Victoria – Australia – March 2019). Yes, we are the lucky ones even if behind each photo, there is a lot of invisible work done.’

Jeff Vander Stucken @jeffvsphoto: ‘The backdrop for the Circuit Race held at Thunderhill Raceway on day 1 of the Chico Stage race was amazing. The rolling hills the, colors, the wispy clouds…everything you could want.’

Berk Mercanci @berkmercanci: ‘This shot is from Tour Of Mesopotamia, Turkey. Mesopotamia is an ancient region known as “the cradle of civilization”. The remaining portion of the Mesopotamia region within Turkish borders is next to Syria, and it’s very close to terror zone. But no matter where, cycling always comes with joy.’

Jeff Vander Stucken @jeffvsphoto: ‘This shot of Anthony Clark (@tweakin101) at the Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships sums up so much of the day: spattered with mud, charging out of a dilapidated camper/trailer packed with revelers handing up all manner of beverage. Words can’t describe the party that was going on in there.’

Tomas Montes @arrieredupeloton: ‘Ultra distance cycling lead the riders to the maximum effort and Aaron Hall was strike by the reality and the hardness of the Pan Celtic Race in his first day. Not even able to to eat the desired pizza.’

Grant Viney @grantvineyphotography: ‘The Pain of the Time Trial.’

Enthusiast

For non-professional photographers using high-end cameras, we have the Enthusiast category. It’s a loose description including entries taken on high-end cameras including Interchangeable Lens Cameras (ILC), mirrorless, film, compact, DSLR and other cameras.

The winner in the Enthusiast category will win a FELT VR Advanced road bike with Ultegra Di2. Second place picks up a Wahoo KICKR CORE, CLIMB Smart Trainer System and a year subscription to the Sufferfest training platform, and third place will win a Bontrager Specter WaveCel Helmet and XXX Road Shoe.

Alain Rumpf @aswisswithapulse: ‘The Emosson dam in Switzerland is well known, having hosted a Tour de France stage finish in 2016. But you can keep riding and head to the Vieux Emosson lake. It comes with a price: 18% for 1.5km.’

Ron Short @shortcycles: ‘Morning training ride in New jersey. Photographed myself using the interval timer on my camera.’

Tom Reynolds @thomasrdotorg: ”I’ve never met a more grounded and level headed World Champion than Steph Morton. Here she is just quietly changing her gearing between sessions including adding links to her chain. No fuss, no demands… all class.’

Marco Loman @lomanmarco: ‘Second placed and current WorldChampion Sanne Cant, after a very hard race with Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado during the Telenet Superprestige race at Gieten, The Netherlands, the sign of the youth is coming.’

Ethan Chiang @ethan_cycling: ‘The photo was taken during Rapha Women’s 100 Taipei ride. I was trying to capture a typical city scene of Taipei. Luckily a signature item, which is the yellow Taxi was right next to the cyclists while they riding pass through a street block when I click the shutter.’

Steve Flemming @stevefleming1: ‘Sequence photo of rider on Hardknott Pass during the Fred Whitton Challenge sportive in the beautiful English Lake District. Hardknott pass comes after 90 miles of effort and features inclines of 33%.’

Roberto Politi @route_defoe: ‘Since I was bored with the usual main roads I would ride, I got un-bored when I started looking at my city, Rome, with different eyes. I’m fond of the cobbled classics and I found my joy in riding the Appian Way over these very ancient cobbles.’

Smartphone/action cam category

The SmartPhone / Action Cam category refers to still photos taken on devices such as iPhones, Android, Windows Mobile, etc, as well as still photos from devices such as GoPro, Shimano Sports Cam, Garmin VIRB, and drones.

The winner of this category will score a pair of Mavic Allroad Pro Carbon SL Wheels, second place will get the 88 piece Park Tool Pk4 kit and third will get a US$500 Castelli gift voucher.

Tom Blackschleger @Tomblackschleger: ‘My definition of FTP = Freedom. Tranquility. Passion. What’s your FTP?’

Cam Taylor @heycamtaylor: ‘Via del Sale, September 2019 (Torino Nice Rally). Riding through snow with blue skies overhead was a treat for two Aussies from Brisbane. We could see the snow capped peaks as we climbed up from the valley but we didn’t realise we’d be riding through it until we rounded the corner in the photo above.’

Marian Fleming @stevefleming1: ‘A stormy summer day in Norway! My husband Steve climbing the private toll road up to the Troll Wall mountain range in Romsdal, close to Andalsnes.’

Nino Priambodo @ninotorious: ‘Journey to Tama Lake Story: I always loved Japan. Everything about it is exciting. And cycling in Japan was one of my dreams. At first I was hesitant to ride being not familiar with the roads and language. But after chatting with a local friend I’m confident and knew where I wanted to go. Near the lake, I had to stop and took this beautiful colors of trees. Japan you are awesome!’

Michael @thommo_mj: ‘Reflecting on life.’

Wouter Hoogenboom @bicycle.racing.pictures: ‘This photo was taken at Floyd Bennett Field, a former airfield in Brooklyn, New York City, during a local bicycle race. This course is reminiscent of Paris-Roubaix: The roads are particularly rough and the weather conditions, especially the wind, can be harsh. Some of the cracks in the road are so big, my action camera would fit in there completely delivering this unique worm’s-eye view.’
