Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: the best of week 2

The 2019 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards are in full swing and we’ve had a big influx of entries this week across all categories, showcasing the beauty of cycling. Last week we posted the first of our showcases, and here’s another collection of dramatic, emotional and inspiring images we’ve received.

Entry fees contribute towards two great causes: supporting cancer research through Tour de Cure, and providing financial assistance for young riders through Young Cyclist Assistance fund.

Throughout the competition, we’ll be posting images on Instagram at @cyclingtips and #markgunterphotoawards2019. It runs until January 5, 2020, at which point our panel of professional photographer judges – Pauline Ballet, Simon Wilkinson, and Chris Auld – will deliberate on who’ll take home the silverware and prizes from our generous sponsors:

This week’s feature image is from Anthony Leutenegger @anthonyleutenegger in the Enthusiast category. The caption: “The agony of defeat.” Just after the final sprint at the CX WC in Bogense I heard a shrill scream in the finishing area. Shooting amongst the craziness past the finishing line I saw French rider Marion Norbert-Riberolle burst into tears and collapse against the fence. She sobbed along the fence whilst her mother tried to comfort her from the other side.’

Professional category

Entry into the fiercely-contested Professional category is permitted for anyone who earns a living from his or her cycling photography. Entrants this year will be competing for the coveted title of Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year, and $2,500 AUD in cash.

Nils Laengner @nils_laengner: ‘Absolute exhaustion. The Benin rider gave it all, but it was not enough…well maybe not enough for a win. But he conquered this brutal long and boiling heat..for me that’s a win.’

Justin Setterfield @justinsetters: ‘The peloton crosses the desert during the 5th UAE Tour 2019.’

Gareth Quinn @mightyquinnphotos: ‘The lines, TTT @ the tour…. Walt Poels has been left behind and trying to make the time limit….’

Julien Payette-Tessier @payette: ‘This portrait of Peter Sagan was during the team presentation at the Grands Prix Cyclistes of Quebec. Peter was waiting for BORA – Hansgrohe presentation. The sun was really harsh on the left side of his face. I tried to get a very contrasty shot to make an epic portrait for an epic man.’

Yuzuru Sunada: ’20 July 2019 106th Tour de France Stage 14 : Tarbes – Tourmalet Bareges Peloton on Tourmalet.’

Enthusiast

For non-professional photographers using high-end cameras, we have the Enthusiast category. It’s a loose description including entries taken on high-end cameras including Interchangeable Lens Cameras (ILC), mirrorless, film, compact, DSLR and other cameras.

The winner in the Enthusiast category will win a FELT VR Advanced road bike with Ultegra Di2. Second place picks up a Wahoo KICKR CORE, CLIMB Smart Trainer System and a year subscription to the Sufferfest training platform, and third place will win a Bontrager Specter WaveCel Helmet and XXX Road Shoe.

Miguel Ena @enasanjuan: ‘Alaphilippe arrived in the Pyrenees with the intention of defending the yellow with teeth and nails, but nothing further from reality, with the French fans crowded in the roadside, he set the best time of the day. A serious candidate for the GC?’

Andy Rogers @fameandspear: ‘Descending Jacob’s Ladder in North-Eastern Tasmania as the light begins to fade.’

Toshiki Sato @toshikisato: ‘Right after the riders cross the finish line of a cyclocross race, there is this unique mixture of excitement, relief, and joy. I tried to capture it with this photo.’

Martijn Pols @tijnpols: ‘The European Track Championships came to The Netherlands last fall, my chance to finally see this great sport live and shoot some nice pics too…’

Nathan Schneeberger @snowymountainphotography: ‘Caroline Mani, the French National Champion, collapsed into the mud after finishing 6th at the Telnet World Cup Waterloo race. (Waterloo, WI)’

Smartphone/action cam category

The SmartPhone / Action Cam category refers to still photos taken on devices such as iPhones, Android, Windows Mobile, etc, as well as still photos from devices such as GoPro, Shimano Sports Cam, Garmin VIRB, and drones.

The winner of this category will score a pair of Mavic Allroad Pro Carbon SL Wheels, second place will get the 88 piece Park Tool Pk4 kit and third will get a US$500 Castelli gift voucher.

Jon Turner @jondturner: ‘Turini – in March ! Just a great day riding with a great friend. The Maritime Alps are a special place.’

Emily Alexander @eealxndr: ‘Good fortune along for the ride.’

Andrea Verardo @AndreaVerardo: ‘It has been captured at Eroica 2019 in Gaiole in Chianti , Toscana.’

Phil Hopley @Hoppers_p: ‘Every Saturday morning we ride a dawn ride around the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Greg Judin captures this great shot over Vaucluse. For me it describes the freedom of an early morning ride.’

Rob Bradby @robbrad12: ‘A wonderful day at the elite ladies road race at the UCI World Champs in Harrogate. I took my wife and two of my girls aged 3 and 6 and they loved the whole day. A fantastic atmosphere which I tried to capture in this image.’
