Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: the best of week 1
The 2019 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards opened just seven days ago and already, we’ve seen some amazing shots come through. We’ll be showcasing a selection of each week’s entries in weekly galleries; this showcase is the first, and we hope you enjoy it.
The Awards are an annual event held in honour of Mark Gunter (June 10, 1974 – November 29, 2015), a widely respected and popular photographer in the cycling community who tragically died of oesophageal cancer. Every entry is making a difference, with entry fees contributing towards two great causes: supporting cancer research through Tour de Cure, and providing financial assistance for young riders through Young Cyclist Assistance fund.
The competition closes on January 5, 2020, at which point our panel of professional photographer judges – Pauline Ballet, Simon Wilkinson, and Chris Auld – will deliberate on who’ll take out the honours and amazing prizes on offer.

This week’s feature image is from Zac Williams @z_w_photography, who writes: “This image is from Stage 18 of the 2019 Tour de France. It shows Julian Alaphilippe descending the Col du Galibier, solo, after being dropped by the GC favourites on the climb. Alaphilippe flew past me into the blind corner behind where I was stood, truly laying everything on the line to secure another day in yellow.”
Professional category
Entry into the fiercely-contested Professional category is permitted for anyone who earns a living from his or her cycling photography. Entrants this year will be competing for the coveted title of Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year, and $2,500 AUD in cash.

Now, photographers and journalists who outnumber the riders flood into the chambers, who drag their reluctant riders into the shower rooms to feature their products and branding in this iconic setting. Mitch Docker from Education First fails to get a bit of peace and quiet as the media melee descends.’

Enthusiast
For non-professional photographers using high-end cameras, we have the Enthusiast category. It’s a loose description including entries taken on high-end cameras including Interchangeable Lens Cameras (ILC), mirrorless, film, compact, DSLR and other cameras.
Chris Kendall @chriskendallphotography: ‘Not for the first time, the ocean and the weather threatened to get in the way of the Tour de Yorkshire. But as an avid surfer, the opportunity to capture my two passions mixing – almost literally, as the ocean threatens to enter the road – was exciting to say the least.’

On the morning of Stage 4 of Tour de Yorkshire in Halifax, James [Shaw] said “If I’m still there on the final climb I’m racing it…” and race it he did. James started the attacking with Froome and finished just behind the front trio and managed to claim an impressive 5th on the stage and 5th overall. He came for a top 10; Team Swift hugely over achieved.’

Smartphone/action cam
The SmartPhone / Action Cam category refers to still photos taken on devices such as iPhones, Android, Windows Mobile, etc, as well as still photos from devices such as GoPro, Shimano Sports Cam, Garmin VIRB, and drones.
Tim McInnes @timmymcinny: ‘Taken at sunrise in Siena on the Tuscany Trail in June this year, a 600km off-road event across stunning and varied terrain. We went to the square to grab breakfast but everywhere was closed, and as Chris rode across the paving the light was perfect and I whipped my iPhone out of my pocket and did the best I could. I was fairly happy with the result.’
Jon Turner @jondturner: ‘Riding through the stunning landscape for Northumberland and the Scottish Borders during the 200-mile Chase the Sun North ride in June. The GoPro is great when you want to travel light and get some crazy angles from the bike.’
AJ Moran @ajmoranphotog: ‘In search of gravel!! Early one morning the boys set out on another excellent adventure … On hitting our first section of gravel we turn left and I’m blown away by the magnificent stream of light beaming through the conifers of the Southern Highlands. Out came the phone and away I went!’

Richard Stubbins @richardstubbinscycles: ‘Mornington Cycles Footy Grand Final Gravel Extravaganza! I believe there was almost 30 riders that day. Starting at the Kings Creek Hotel in Hastings, Victoria, we set out along the Western Port Boardwalk towards Crib Point and then down to Somers beach. It was like being out riding with a bunch of friends when we were kids. Shot with my GoPro 7 standing up on my bike holding it as high as I cold above my head.’
