As the weekend inches closer, the headlines from the cycling world actually feature at least some the themes you’d expect in a typical July: Tour roster selection, rider extensions, sponsorship searches, and big rides.
Those who have been following the Manuela Fundación/Mitchelton-Scott saga may be interested to learn that the Manuela Fundación is apparently looking into its options with other teams around the peloton. We don’t have any specifics as of yet, but we can certainly think of a few squads who have been on the lookout for new sponsorship partners.
Meanwhile, Ineos’s Richard Carapaz and Jhonatan Narváez may be in for a huge bike ride in the near future as they are apparently hoping to take a flight from Colombia to Europe for the resumption of racing. El Telegrafo reports that the Ecuadorian teammates are making plans to cover many of the nearly one thousand kilometers to Bogotá by bike as part of their pre-Tour training.

| Carapaz hoping to take Colombian flight to Europe
According to El Telegrafo, reigning Giro d’Italia champ Richard Carapaz and his Ineos teammate Jhonatan Narváez are hoping to make it aboard the flight from Bogotá that is being arranged to take several Colombian athletes across the Atlantic as sporting events resume in Europe.
El Telegrafo reports that the Ecuadorian duo is requesting assistance from the Ecuadorian and Colombian foreign ministries and plans to travel much of the nearly 1,000-kilometer journey to Bogotá by bicycle as a way to keep their training up.
| Manuela Fundación weighs its options
The Manuela Fundación’s plans to acquire Mitchelton-Scott may have fallen through, but AS reports that the organization is looking into other possible avenues to enter the pro cycling space.
As team representatives told AS, “There are other teams that are for sale and we are evaluating them for the future.”
At this point it is unclear which squads have drawn the Manuela Fundación’s interest, but it is known that multiple pro teams are on the lookout for new sponsorship partners amid the global financial uncertainty brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. We’ll keep you posted if we hear any specifics …
| No Tour for Terpstra
Currently recovering from multiple injuries sustained in a training crash last month, Niki Terpstra will not be in attendance at this year’s Tour de France. The two-time Monument winner was not named to Tour de France long list announced by Total-Direct Énergie on Thursday.
The nine riders named by the French ProTeam on Thursday’s were Niccolò Bonifazio, Lilian Calmejane, Jérôme Cousin, Fabien Grellier, Romain Sicard, Julien Simon, Geoffrey Soupe, Rein Taaramäe, and Anthony Turgis.
| Connor Swift extends at Arkéa-Samsic
Former British national road champion Connor Swift will ride on with Arkéa-Samsic for two more years. The 24-year-old, who won the British road title in 2018, joined Arkéa from Madison-Genesis in 2019.
“I work hard for my team mates when needed but I am also allowed my own opportunities in races when the time comes which makes it is a nice balance,” Swift said in a press release. “Also being on this team I can progress my knowledge and learn more french which is a great life skill to know another language.”
| Sea Otter cancelled
After initially rescheduling for October, Sea Otter has been cancelled for 2020, with event officials explaining in a statement that “after frequent discussions with Monterey County health officials, it has become clear that we cannot host an event that will meet our health and safety standards.”
Instead, organizers are planning a virtual event, Sea Otter Play, that will feature product launches and bike ride challenges in lieu of the actual event.
| Eurobike currently set to go ahead in November
As Bicycle Retailer and Industry News reports, officials in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, have approved trade fairs to be held from September onwards, giving organizers at Eurobike a green light to move forward.
The event was initially scheduled to run from September 2 to 4 but is now scheduled from November 24 to 26.
| Rapha Foundation announces third round of grant recipients
The Rapha Foundation has announced five US-based organizations that have been awarded grants in the organization’s third round of funding, with a total of $750,000 awarded “to encourage, inspire, and support underrepresented young people looking to engage and thrive in the sport of cycling.”
The grantees are the Cascade Bicycle Club’s Major Taylor Project, CYCLE Kids, the Detroit Fitness Foundation, the Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team, and NICA.
