Lorena Wiebes makes it a RideLondon hat trick
Lorena Wiebes (DSM) sprinted to a clean sweep of stage wins at the RideLondon Classique with victory on the Central London circuit ahead of Elisa Balsamo (Trek-Segafredo) and Lotto Kopecky (SD Worx).
For the first 30 km, multiple riders tried to break away but nothing stuck until Amber Kraak of Jumbo Visma briefly found a gap, but was quickly brought back.
FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope and AG Insurance-NXTG were the most active teams, trying to send multiple riders up the road. Brodie Chapman tried to instigate a big move heading into the final few laps, but they could not get away, and Julia Borgstrom (AG Insurance-NXTG) suffered the same fate shortly after.
Then finally, with 17 km to go, Ally Wollaston (AG Insurance-NXTG) attacked with Krista Doebel-Hicock (EF Education-Tibco-SVB), getting a maximum advantage of about 20 seconds and staying away for 10km.
Wollaston went solo going into the final lap, but the bunch was closing in with Trek-Segafrdo working on the front for Balsamo, and the Kiwi was caught with 8km to go.
The team of the race leader Wiebes only got on the front with 7 km to go to prepare to lead out their sprinter. In the final few kilometres, teams Movistar, Jumbo-Visma, and DSM all fought for dominance, but it was Charlotte Kool of DSM who led Wiebes out to take her third win in three days.
Balsamo’s second-place finish secures the same placing overall, while Emma Norsgaard (Movistar) held onto third at the end of three hard stages.
