Lachlan Morton renews with EF

Lachlan Morton will ride on with EF into 2021, the team announced on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Australian’s current stint with the squad began in 2019, as he came over after two seasons with Dimension Data. He also rode for the Garmin-Sharp organization earlier in his career.

During his recent tenure with EF, Morton has spearheaded the team’s “alternative racing” campaign. While making several starts on the pro road circuit, including at last year’s Tour of Utah, where he won a stage, and at this year’s Giro d’Italia, Morton has also ridden numerous off-road events and also set an Everesting record (which has since been topped).

He appears set to continue that combination of objectives next year as he embarks on his third season with EF.

“I want to continue to do as much as possible. I have plenty of ideas for alternative events,” Morton said in an EF press release. “I want to do as much as possible in that department. But I also have a fresh motivation to set some new goals for WorldTour events and really chase those, too.

“You’ve gone from one extreme in Badlands, which is a wild solo endeavor, to a more traditional extreme, which is the Giro.”

Morton noted that getting back to Grand Tour racing at the Giro (after last racing the Vuelta a España in 2017) was a particularly positive experience.

“I’ve learnt so much and it’s really lit a fire inside me to come back and be competitive at these events,” he said. It feels like a new sport to me again.”
