Merijn Zeeman has been expelled from the Tour de France after an apparent confrontation with a UCI official following Wednesday’s stage 17.

Zeeman’s expulsion was announced in the jury report after Thursday’s 18th stage. The report cited Zeeman for “intimidation, insults, improper behavior by a member of a team towards a UCI official during the bicycle check carried out at the end of stage 17.”

In addition to kicking Zeeman out of the race, the jury also fined him 2,000 Swiss francs.

In the immediate aftermath of stage 18, it was not clear exactly what transpired after the previous stage that led to Zeeman’s removal from the Tour.

Whatever the nature of the incident, Zeeman, a key staffer for the squad currently leading the race with Primoz Roglic, will no longer be watching the Tour from the team car from here on out.
